When you go looking for dog-friendly accommodation, it divides cleanly into two kinds: places where “pets may also stay”, and places where “the dog is the point”.
DOG SPA RESORT ALTOPIANO in Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture, is unmistakably the second kind. It is a small hotel of 11 rooms with two dog runs for guests only, a private-rental bath you can take your dog into, and a dog pool in summer. You can even eat the Italian set dinner with your dog beside you.
Our score as a stay with a dog was a full 5 out of 5. There is nothing to fault.
And yet our overall score was 2.5, with value at 1 — the lowest of any property we have reviewed. We paid about 80,000 yen for one night. Here is honestly why, covering both the good and the disappointing.

We stayed in a Type A room — 50 m², the largest at the property. What we paid was about 80,000 yen for the night. That figure feeds directly into the value score below.

5 out of 5 with a dog: nothing to fault here
Starting with the good. The facilities for dogs were the best of any property we have stayed at.
A private-rental bath you can take your dog into
According to the official website, the private-rental bath is limited to one group per day and must be booked, and you can take your dog in with you. The changing room has a lead hook and mats.
Places where you can bathe with your dog are not common. This is a clear strength.
Two dog runs, one for small dogs and one for medium
There are two dog runs for guests only — one for small dogs, one for medium, so you can let them play without worrying about size differences. There is drinking water and a paw-washing area for afterwards, plus aftercare amenities at the entrance.
In summer there is also a dog pool, with separate shallow and deep areas.
The amenities even include nappies
This was the biggest surprise. The official website lists the following among the dog amenities.
- Toilet sheets (large size)
- Wet wipes for paws
- Nappies in every size — for puppies and senior dogs
Whether a property can accommodate a senior dog is a pressing question when you travel with one. Places that stock nappies in every size are, we think, rare.
You can sleep together, and the flooring is non-slip
Every room has waterproof sheets and covers so you can sleep with your dog (some beds are not suitable, so do check). If you would rather not, crates and dog beds are available to borrow.
The official website also covers the flooring: the areas dogs walk on have been changed to non-slip surfaces, with the ground-floor Type B in particular built that way. It is recommended for dogs with injured legs and for senior dogs.
Beyond that, you can bring your dog in on a lead — carrying them or using a buggy is not required. There is a snack buffet for dogs on site, and if your dog is unwell they will refer you to a nearby veterinary clinic. The website states that staff include holders of dog-trainer and grooming qualifications.
Our frank impression is that the “dogs first” billing is earned. There is no reason not to give this 5 out of 5.
We used the private-rental bath. What impressed us there was that a shower head for dogs was provided — separate from the one for people, so you can wash your dog properly. It made clear that the room really is built on the assumption that dogs come in. A small thing, but this kind of extra effort is what separates places.
We only used the indoor dog run, so we cannot speak to how the others are to use.
Four room types: your dog’s size decides which you can book
There are 11 rooms, and the size of dog accepted differs by type. Do check this before booking.

Only Types A and B take large dogs — three rooms in total. With a large dog, booking early is essential.
As for bathrooms, only Type B has a bathtub; A, C and D have shower rooms. The beds are Simmons, and there is a washlet toilet and deodorising spray.
Disappointment 1: the food tastes good, but the portions are very small
One of this property’s selling points is an Italian set dinner eaten with your dog beside you. The official website bills it as a memorable ristorante experience.
On taste, we thought it was good. But the portions were very small.
It is a set menu, so each plate arrives carefully presented, but we finished with a distinct sense of “is that it?” We scored the food 3.5 out of 5: marks up for taste, marks down for quantity.
To give a sense of scale, the husband’s verdict was “even double the amount would still be light.” Anyone with a decent appetite will certainly not have enough.
Disappointment 2: no shop, no convenience store. Bring food
And this is the single thing we most want to get across in this article.
There is no shop on the premises. And there is no convenience store nearby.
The official website does say that snacks for dogs are sold at the front desk (the same ones as in the in-house snack buffet). There is a community lounge with complimentary drinks.
So drinks and dog snacks are covered on site. Food for people is not.
Combined with the small dinner portions, this bites. If you get peckish at night, there is nowhere to go. Our conclusion is that securing food before you arrive is essential.
There are convenience stores and supermarkets on the road in from the Nasu interchange, so buying before check-in is the practical answer.
* If you arrive by train or bus, be warned that the nearest convenience store is about a 30-minute walk. We steeled ourselves and did the hour-long round trip in the middle of the night for a late-night snack.
Disappointment 3: no shuttle. A 20-minute walk from the bus stop by train
Access is another thing to know in advance. The FAQ on the official website says so plainly.
“We do not offer a shuttle service. We apologise for the inconvenience, and recommend arriving by hire car or your own car.”
In practice it is a fair distance from the nearest station, and we strongly recommend going by car. By train, you get off at the nearby bus stop and then walk about 20 minutes. Twenty minutes with a dog and luggage is not easy.

If it does not come up, search Google Maps for “DOG SPA RESORT ALTOPIANO”. It is unsettling when the name does not appear, so this is worth knowing.
Value 1 out of 5: the facilities are superb, and it still did not balance
We scored value 1 out of 5 — the lowest of any property we have reviewed.
To be clear, this does not mean the facilities are poor. As the 5 out of 5 above says, the provision for dogs is of the highest standard.
We still gave it 1 because what we received did not balance against what we paid. The size of the dinner, the absence of a shop, the absence of a shuttle. Each is small on its own, but they stack up into a feeling of “for this money there are other options.”
We paid about 80,000 yen for one night. With that figure in mind, the calculation changes.
For 80,000 yen, a dinner that would still be light at double the size. Nowhere on site to buy more, and no convenience store nearby. No transfer from the station. There is no question that the provision for dogs is of the highest standard, but even allowing for that, we could not feel it matched the price.

If you are travelling with children, note the “from primary-school age” condition. This blog is about travelling with children, but at this property you cannot bring preschool children. It is more accurate to think of it as a place given over entirely to dogs.

How you rate this place comes down to how completely you can accept whose trip it is.
Seen through a dog’s eyes, this really is a good place. Run in the dog run, swim in the pool, soak in the bath, sleep in the same bed as your owner. On the dog’s satisfaction, 5 out of 5 without hesitation.
Add a human point of view and the picture changes. Not enough food, nowhere to buy more, and awkward access from the station. That gap is what produced 5 out of 5 with a dog and 2.5 overall.
If we went again, we would drive, load the car with food, and accept it as one night for the dog. Framed that way, this property can be enjoyed properly.
